BURUNDI, KAYANZA PROVINCE | 1700-2000 MASL | RED BOURBON | WASHED
The Kavumu is produced at the Munkaze Washing Station in Burundi, run by Ephrem Sebatigita. This year is the first year the washing station has taken enough volume to justify lot separation, which means the Kavumu is one of a few micro lots coming out of this mill (Kavumu is a hill nearby to the washing station).
The Kavumu is the second single origin we’ve brought in from the importer Homage Coffee Source (following the Dusangiriejambo of last year). We also use a lower-grade coffee from them in our Giuseppe blend. Homage work exclusively out of Burundi and Uganda, both of which are emerging nations in specialty coffee. Coffeebar’s Vertical Sourcing program often prioritizes working with smaller markets and developing regions. In the case of East Africa, this means we focus on up-and-coming regions like Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda (the African Great Lakes region), rather than traditional producing countries like Kenya and Tanzania.
The work being done by Homage Coffee Source, along with other importers and exporters that are focusing on the Great Lakes region, has led to rapid increases in the quality of coffee coming out of these countries. These improvements in quality will lead to gains in market access and greater investment in the region
